While housed within the College of Health, our healthcare curriculum extends its reach across all academic programs. We empower students university-wide to engage with healthcare perspectives.

Addressing Workforce Shortages

More than 1,500 graduates of ��ִ��˰�appԼ�� are currently working in healthcare-related fields.

The healthcare sector faces impending shortages of nurses and physicians. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a shortage of up to 195,400 nurses by 2031, while the Association of American Medical Colleges projects that physician demand is growing faster than supply, leading to a projected total physician shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034.

Academic Programs

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Our patient-centered education cultivates compassionate nurses as agents of positive change. Students grasp nursing as a scientific field, employing critical thinking and evidence-based practices to ensure safe, effective care.

Undergraduate-level Exercise Science

Students work hands on with faculty in a state-of-the-art laboratory that allows them to collect data and develop and conduct research projects. Additionally, they engage in local community settings, supporting first responders' training for the physical demands of their roles.

Pre-Health Advising (Biology and Chemistry)

Our program guides students through Biology and Chemistry focuses, which have traditionally served as the path for graduates to pursue professional careers across the healthcare spectrum, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary care and pharmacy.

Masters in Exercise Physiology

The customizable curriculum prepares students for careers in exercise physiology, encompassing skills in clinical, medical and research settings, as well as human performance, establishing skills related to coaching and sports science.

Graduate-level Counseling

The Department of Counseling offers master's degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, both CACREP-accredited. A concentration in Substance Use Disorders Counseling is also offered to students.

Future Expansions

The College of Health will include the Student Health Center and the student-run EMS program, as well as future program offerings for undergraduate and graduate students.

Leadership

Interim Dean Melissa Cole, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, CENP, spearheads the College of Health's inception. A national search for a permanent dean is ongoing, with an appointment anticipated in early 2024.

Alumni Outcomes in Healthcare

joe micca buffalo bills physical therapist

Through a passion for sport and a knack for healthcare, Joe Micca quickly made his way into the NFL after graduating from John Carroll with an Exercise Science degree in 2010. As the Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, Joe was one of the first responders to Bills safety Damar Hamlin's in-game heart attack.

Andrew graduated with a B.S. in Biology from John Carroll and went on to lead his own family dental practice in Northeast Ohio. During his time at ��ִ��˰�appԼ��, he was part of the Dental Club and the Middle Eastern Student Association. After ��ִ��˰�appԼ��, he obtained his DDS from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.

Madeline Hric, MS, RD, LD, graduated from John Carroll in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science. In school, she conducted an independent research project on: "The Influence of Nutrition and Physical Activity Behaviors on Mental Health in College Students." She now works as an inpatient registered dietitian covering two gastrointestinal/general surgery units and a neurology step-down unit at the Cleveland Clinic.
