Biography

After completing my doctorate in 1972, I joined the Faculty at John Carroll as an assistant professor, teaching mathematics and statistics courses.听 In the early 1980s, I began to study the emerging field of computer science and was one of a small group of department members who designed and taught the courses in the University鈥檚 new computer science major.听 As more faculty members with formal backgrounds in computer science were added to the department, and after serving as department chair for eight years, I resumed teaching mostly mathematics and statistics. At that time, my research interests shifted from the structure of semigroups to the use of computer algebra systems as an aid to helping students understand mathematical concepts.听 By the time of my retirement in 2014, I had become a mathematical generalist, having taught more than fifty distinct undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, statistics, and computer science.
